The purpose of the Florida Progressive Information Network is to create a framework for progressive groups in the state of Florida to more easily alert progressive individuals on issues of importance. The end goal is to create a progressive movement in the State of Florida that can wield a political voice that will effectively challenge the stranglehold that some special interests and religious extremists currently have on the politics of this state. What is an Information Network? An Information Network is a network or system through which information flows. The goal of an Information Network is to get information into the hands of people who have the power to act on that information. Participating in an Information Network does not require a commitment to endorse or act upon that information, just an agreement to share the information.
Why organize a Progressive Information Network in Florida? In order to change the current political landscape in Florida, progressive individuals need to be mobilized in such a way that their unified voice can be strengthened so that politicians at all levels of government will be motivated to pay attention. A Progressive Information Network will help the progressive movement in Florida by providing a centralized and streamlined method for progressive organizers to find and mobilize progressive individuals. History of FL-PIN For several years now, progressive organizations around Florida have been meeting at annual summits and collaborating on a wide range of projects. One of these projects was the Progressive Voter File. The file was a listing of the registered voting membership of a variety of progressive organizations. At its height, the file contained over 350,000 members. If even a small percentage of these voters could be mobilized on any given issue, politicians would be forced to pay attention. The problem was that the protocol to access this file was time consuming and contact with the progressive voters (once approved) can only be made via snail mail. It normally took about 2 months for an organization to make contact with individuals in the list. In short this was a valuable resource that could not be mobilized in a quick and efficient manner. The Florida Progressive Network is designed to harness the potential power of a large list of Florida Progressives Individuals in an effective way. FL-PIN streamlines and automates the process of a group’s ability to communicate with Progressive Individuals outside their existing membership base, so that Florida Progressives can put pressure on their elected officials in a timely manner.
